Enrolment enquiries
Tirriwirri School offers educational programs for students with special learning needs from Kindergarten to Year 12 within a caring and supportive environment. Tirriwirri School operates under the policies and procedures of the NSW Department of Education. A regional placement panel operates to assess applications for special settings and ensure eligibility for your child.
Schools for Specific Purposes (SSPs)
Schools for specific purposes (SSPs) provide specialist and intensive support in a dedicated setting for students with moderate to high learning and support needs.
Schools for specific purposes (SSPs) support students with intellectual disability, mental health issues or autism, students with physical disability or sensory impairment, and students with learning difficulties or behaviour disorder.
They cater for students from kindergarten to Year 12 who meet the Department's disability criteria.
Placements and review
Applications for placement are through the Access Request process. An Access Request is arranged by the school learning and support team at the local public school.
A student is offered enrolment in a SSP through a placement panel process. A student's eligibility is determined through the Department's disability criteria as well as the availability of a place in an appropriate support class.
Enrolment arrangements for students with disability and additional learning and support needs are the same as for all students. To get information about enrolment, parents and carers can visit the local public school.
SSPs review the placement of each student annually. Reviews consider all aspects of a student's personalised learning and support, including whether or not the current placement is best meeting their learning and support needs.
We are a School for Specific Purpose (SSP). We provide specialised support for students with medium to high learning and support needs. Learn more about Schools for Specific Purposes (SSPs).
How to enroll
Enrolment into an SSP is different from other public schools. It involves a referral and placement process. If you believe an SSP may be the right setting for your child, your local school is the first place to start. They will work with you to understand your child’s needs and help you explore the right support options available.
- Find your local school: you can use School Finder to locate your local public school.
- Discuss support pathways: talk to your local school about available support pathways for your child.
Enrolment in an SSP is considered when:
- your child has significant and ongoing support needs
- they meet the department’s disability criteria
- this type of specialist support is the most appropriate.
For placement in an SSP, your child's current school must submit an application called an access request. This is done in consultation with the family. A local placement panel then reviews the application and makes a recommendation.
